An Update on the New Auction

AUCTION SYSTEM: ALMOST ALPHA!

By: Anne L. Coulombe
October, 1998

I guess you must be wondering what happened to the third clock in the gallery!   OES has given it a facelift with an updated engine and look, it is now comfortably resting in the new gallery along with a brand new clock and reader boards.  Of course the new clocks now support the display for pennies, dimes and dollars as well as multiple purchases with up to four seat numbers.  Don't worry, the last 2 clocks will not move until 1999 once we are using the new gallery.

What is Alpha?
Why should you be interested?

Alpha is a development milestone that represents the first time that all the pieces and parts of the auction system come together.  Alpha could be considered the rough-in for a building with the electrical and plumbing turned on for some areas only!  We can now start our real testing, and will also be able to have mock auctions with feedback from the various users of the system.  The new building has been wired with special keypad cables, Ethernet for the network and fiber optic cable linking the current office to the new section.

Are we having fun yet?  Tons of hard work from all the vendors are bringing Alpha to reality.  Now we must make sure that every aspect of the system functions properly to ensure that this auction system is easy to use.

What's coming next?

Tom will advise you of the time and place to choose your seat and/or booth.  We will let you know when we can demonstrate the system, and when we are ready to test it with real users such as yourselves!  If you see us running around comparing the current system with the new system, it is to best service the UFG community.

I am always open to questions, whether at UFG in the mornings, or directly on my cell at 816-5927.

Infrastructure Complete

By: Anne L. Coulombe
October, 1998

As in the construction of any solid structure such as a building or a greenhouse, we must complete the infrastructure of support which in our case is wires to connect the keypads, clocks, controllers and computers. We have finished pulling over 33,000 feet of Beldon cables for the keypads and clocks, 25,000 feet of Ethernet Cat5, 1500 feet of fiber optic cable and over 50,000 feet of Cat3 telephone wire. I think that BKS Cablecom - the cable guys - are happy to be finished this job and now come back on occasion for "extras"!

With this wiring, we have now completed the infrastructure that connects the first 50

operational keypads with the clocks, reader-boards, controllers and of course the rest of the computer network that is required to run a full auction. UFG is now in the training process for the staff who use the accounting back-end, as well as training those who will assist all the growers and buyers in understanding and test-driving this system over the next few months.

Features and functionality of the system will be described in more detail in the next few newsletters. In the meantime, we are always open to feedback.
